At what point does slang make the transition to acceptable, proper grammar, and who makes that decision. As a general rule it doesn’t bother me, but recently two examples are driving me mad. “24/7” and even worse, “I’m all about..” I can’t remember when I first heard somebody say “24/7” but I believe it was a very long time ago. Maybe in some R&B song when I was in college. I do remember that it always annoyed me. I recently discovered that CNN now uses the term in its promos. You must be kidding me! Can’t we rely on the news media for accuracy in ANY aspect? I don’t know why I’m asking that. A couple weeks ago I heard a reporter refer to the “point of origination of the fire.” ORIGINATION?! That’s not even a word – slang or otherwise! Although I now try and use it as often as possible. Kind of like “accribits” (I doubt anybody will recognize that obscure reference). As for “I’m all about [fill in the blank].” Also often stated on behalf of a group, “We’re all about..” I remember exactly when the first time I heard that was. “The Real World – Hawaii,” what a nightmare. So first let me explain/justify WHY I watched the show at all. As I may have mentioned, I used to live in Honolulu, for five years or so. At the time they aired the season of The Real World from Honolulu I was living in Jersey and hand a visit to Hawaii scheduled, so the idea was to watch it to get to see some of my favorite spots and get excited about my trip home (I pretty much consider Hawaii “home” now, since that’s where I met all the best people in my life.). Then the show turned into a complete train wreck and I just couldn’t stop myself. What a bunch of f’d up people! Anyway, on the very first episode, Ruthie, what a winner, ends up in the hospital getting her stomach pumped and whoever went along to enable her, probably Matt, what a loser, called the house. He was updating Kaia, what a psycho, on the situation. She was of course topless, and said, “Look, we’re all about helping you out…” blah, blah, blah I remember commenting at the time about how obnoxious that was. Now the CEO of Ford is on a commercial saying, “We’re all about quality.” Or some b.s. like that. Ugh!! I must hear it at least 8 times a day it really annoys me. Isn’t lingo eventually supposed to GO?! Admittedly I, like the rest of America, use “that’s cool” and “that sucks” FAR too often but at least that slang remains slang. I have yet to hear Stone Phillips use ‘cool’ or ‘sucks’ on Dateline.

Not so obscure…Murphy Brown was it not?
Awesome comparison. It is rather coincidental, we were just talking about the word accribits when we googled it (OK googled isn’t a word either…)
