A new year’s revelation
When I started this thing I explained that I considered doing a site of movie rental reviews, obviously I decided to go a different direction, but I said that once in awhile I might throw one in the mix. So here we go:
“Signs” – I liked it! But that’s not exactly a quote worthy of a trailer is it? So as M. Night. Shanana movies go, It was not quite “6th sense” calibur, but way better than “Unbreakable,” which had truck loads of potential but was painfully slow and failed to focus on the really cool part of the plot, the super hero vs nemesis part, then it just ended in the middle of nowhere. But we’re talking about “Signs” here.. I had heard complaints about the ending, but the only problem I had with it is that he went back to God. I don’t have a problem with it just because I’m an evil agnostic, but more because having been nearly conquered by an aggressive alien race would, in my opinion, pretty much confirm the fact that there is quite obviously no god, or did I miss the part in the bible about the big green guys who travel from afar. What day were they created? Anyway.. I suppose some of the alien behaviour was a little hoaky but overall I thought it was very entertaining. The suspense built quickly enough to keep my attention – and creep me out sufficiently, there was just the right amount of comic relief with things like the tin foil hats, and the kids didn’t annoy me. So there you have it.
“xXx” (triple X) – With Sammy and Vin Diesel it’s pretty hard to go wrong. Having said that, let me say they came reeeaaally close. Cause I’ll be honest.. if I didn’t think Vin was hot I’d have to give it a triple P for pppleeeazze.
“Donnie Darko” – I can’t even explain why I like this movie so much (I’m sure that says something about my psyche) It’s dark, it’s morbid, it’s unsettling, that frickin’ bunny scares the crap out of me, and the ending is really confusing in that space-time continuom / paradox kinda way. But I think it’s excellent, and Jake Gyllenhal will always have a place in my heart because of it. Hey, I even enjoyed “Bubble Boy“- the polar opposite of “Donnie Darko.” I highly recommend this movie, especially to anybody who grew up in the 80′s, you’ll at least appreciate the music. But be prepared – it’s a thinker.
Speaking of dark, brooding, 80′s music angst, I had a new year’s revelation the other day. We were in the car singing along to something depressing and acknowledged the fact that we used to feel exactly like that, but now things are pretty much, for the most part, okay and that we are, in a word.. content. I said (and I swear I didn’t steal this) “You know why?.. Because LIFE is one big process of lowering your standards.” That may be the most brilliant epiphany I’ve ever had. In your youth you have such high expectations for everything and everyone, every day is full of disappointments. But, at this point.. if I get to sleep in I’m pretty damned satisfied, and chocolate chip cookies can make my whole day. “So why do we still get disappointed at all or surprised when people screw us?” we pondered. “Because we do still maintain some level of standards. So perhaps by the time we’re 40, we’ll have no hope and life will be even more satisfying.” Time will tell.
By the way, as new year’s RESOLUTIONS go.. I made only one, and my strategy here is to make it attainable (why set yourself up for failure right of the bat?). I plan to swear more. -oops, I mean, I intend to fucking swear more. And yes I mean big ones like “fuck” in all it’s tenses, not just “damn” this and “hell” that unless they are part of compound cursing like “fucking damn” and/or “fucking hell.” My friends followed my lead and made attainable resolutions; m is going to lie more, and John is going to try to be less happy. So far we’ve all been pretty fucking successful, but I need to incorporate “christ” in more often.

In response to lowering standards and when you reach 40. I’m nearing that now and I see hope as just another word that rhymes with dope…which, the more I think about it has a strong correlation. Oh..don’t forget “tap dancing” with Christ.
