so the memorial day estrogen festival went down like this:
because i said so - diane keaton, mandy moore, etc. this movie got hahwribble reviews, and it does have quite a few really tacky mother-daughter conversations that would never, ever, ever, happen in real life, but other than that i thought it was pretty ok.
freedom writers - ok, so how many of these inspirational, inner-city teachers are there anyway? there’s like one of these movies a month. so while it was cliche’ this one had an interesting angle. the inspiring teacher, played this time by hilary swank, got the inner-city youths who had endured the L.A. riots all jazzed up about the diary of anne franke - which i read in h.s. and vaguely remember it being very, very, very depressing. but ok. the kicker was, and of course this is a true story, they were so inspired by the woman who hid the frankes that when they found out that she was still alive they raised the money to fly her from amsterdam so they could meet her. umm.. wow! good for them! so it was pretty ok.
catch and release - definitely not what i expected, and not as predictable as anticipated except that the boy gets the girl even tho in the beginning the girl thinks the boy is a complete douche. jennifer garner & friends (including kevin smith, who is always entertaining) were all fine so it was pretty ok.
music and lyrics - ok this was surprisingly good, and got really surprisingly good reviews for a romantic comedy. it was a little hard not to take it personally when they were poking fun at the music of the 80’s, but hey you gotta laugh, right. and it did remind me of going to the duran duran show two years ago.. when we first walked in to the venue i was impressed with the diversity of the crowd - young, old, male, female. but once we got down to our seats, eighth row center, it was nothing but thirty-something women (mid-to-late thirty-something to be more specific) acting like teenage girls. but it was soooo fun! anyway.. the movie was good.
Please keep in mind that my opinion that these movies were “okay” or “good” or whatever, must be kept in context. In other words, there is not a straight man on the planet who would like these movies!!
but we did accidentally watch a documentary in the middle of all this girlie madness called, “Who Killed The Electric Car.” and wow! it really sucks to be plucked from your blissful ignorance, especially when it’s way to late! i had no idea that in recent years, cars that were completely electric were on the market and i certainly didn’t know that there was a complete conspiracy to get rid of them! and they didn’t just squash further production… they actually confiscated and SHREDDED hundreds of wonderfully efficient, environmentally friendly, brand new and like new cars!!! eeeeevil! it was really very enlightening, yet entertaining, yet enraging. and it was probably because we were in the middle of the estrogen film festival that i actually found it really sad, like i wanted to cry when they showed the last of the ev-1’s being loaded onto trailers to go off to slaughter.
but then we rounded off the weekend with the “miss universe pageant,” which i have never, ever watched before. it was fabulous!! it was the tackiest thing i’ve seen this side of vegas! and thanks to the magic of the internet we knew ahead of time that miss usa was going to fall on the catwalk during the evening gown extravaganza, which i thought was going to be hilarious (because, as those closest to me will tell you, i’m just mean), but surprisingly when it happened i felt really, really bad for her and only blipped it back to try and see what caused it. i was even impressed with her for recovering like a champ. she didn’t even look like she wanted to cry (which she totally should have and then maybe they would not have made so much fun of her on the internet the next day). again, perhaps i was affected by all the movies and felt the solidarity of sisterhood instead of the schadenfreude i usually suffer from. anyway, it was thoroughly entertaining, but miss brazil was totally robbed!! she was hot!
