A Rare Retraction

{alternate title, the “The World Series of Lying”} almost as rarely as stephen colbert, i have to issue a retraction, but this is one of those times.. m reminded me that for game 2 of the world series we were for the most part out to dinner w/our friend monica. so it was only 5 games that i watched in their entirety.

if it helps, the waiter was keeping us posted about the score, we listened to the game on the radio on the drive home, (in retrospect those two things might actually be worse than watching the game on some level) and we were home in time to watch the last inning.

but speaking of lying about the world series, here’s a bit of office gossip that’s interesting enough to share. note, the names have been changed to protect the innocent, as well as the guilty. there is a relatively new girl at work, she’s been there almost exactly two months. we’ll call her new girl. so i liked new girl at first, as did the rest of the department, we are a pretty laid back group and she seemed nice enough, though she did seem to tell a lot of.. peculiar stories. but it didn’t take long until i started to think some of her stories were more “far-fetched” than just peculiar, but i didn’t say anything about it until somebody else, let’s call her “joan” asked me if i found some of new girl’s stories odd? joan is new girl’s direct supervisor. i said yes, and we compared notes and agreed that well, she’s just odd. for example, one day during lunch we were sharing stories about the wildlife we find in the denver area in our own backyards, foxes, raccoons, even coyotes. then new girl chimes in, yeah, we have bears in our neighborhood. we all looked at her strangely i think. keep in mind new girl just moved here for this job from the east coast. we asked her where do you live again?? she lives in a really small town / community between denver and boulder. another guy who was at the table, we’ll call him jimmy, lives in another small town / community near new girl’s and he’s from CO, which is rare, and he just said i’ve never heard of that. but she didn’t back down, she said it had happened more than once already and insisted that she had seen them herself. now this is colorado, home of the rocky mountains and yes, bears. but bears coming down from the mountains and being spotted among the human folk is still news. it’s always on the news when there is a bear sighting but it’s usually in some piss-ant mountain town, so i got back to the internet and looked for news stories in colorado re bear sightings and only found one in boulder which is rare but not unheard of and one serious issue in aspen – serious because you know, it affects the rich people then. (where’s mayor quimby with the bear tax when you need him?) but nothing near where new girl lives, but i don’t say anything to anybody, whatever. then the second day of the rockies trying to sell their tickets online, and the second time people in denver lost their frickin’ minds trying to buy them online. everybody and i mean everybody in that big building was trying to get tickets including me because i was going to sell those puppies for a big fat profit on craigslist! nobody, and i mean nobody, could get thru. and hours later when we had all given up new girl pops up with the exciting news that she got tickets. in fact she got eight tickets! joan quickly questioned her because the most you could buy was four, but new girl quickly covered with i got 4 and my husband got 4.

and i just realized how long its going to take to type this story , but its just getting good, so i’ll be back…
